Time Goes Back For The Goodnight Loving Supperclub

The Goodnight Loving Supperclub isn't a pricey restaurant in San Marco but rather a band who sounds as if they haven't emerged from their parents garage in forty years. Channeling the 60's as though they had some sort of guru on staff, The Goodnight Loving Supperclub are clearly in touch with their inner-Kinks and Ray Davies. Their self titled album is a paisley swirl of charming pop that sounds as if Mr. Davies was the missing fifth member of their band. The record is awesome stuff that puts a modern twist on a classic sound and really never gets boring or sounds post dated.

The Goodnight Loving Supperclub is a fantastic roundabout tribute to the sixties without really knowing it is. The jangly guitars, twangy riffs, upbeat drumming, and jolly vocals all contribute to this atmosphere of retro cool. Despite looking like a group of Brooklynites, the GLS sound as if they're lost in a Swingin' London dream they don't want to wake up from. I have to say that I really have enjoyed this record because of that dream like sense as well as it's sound and feel. This is the sound that Of Montreal always wanted to tap into but could never find; this is pop, pure simple guitar pop, that you can chew bubblegum to and do the twist to and it's for those reasons that I find this record irresistible.

From the lazy twee pop of "Summer Dream," to the strangely titled jangle pop mastery of, "Earworm," The GLS are clearly on to something here and The Goodnight Loving Supperclub reinforces this repeatedly. It's affection for all things old is apparent on each and every song and that spirit guides this record to pop heaven. The Goodnight Loving Supperclub is a sugary treat that you don't come across too often and it's ashame because I could listen to stuff like this all day!
