The Posies Love Blood/Candy

The Posies have been around for well over twenty years. They’ve been around for so long that I actually put them into rotation when I was music director at WVUM in Miami back in 1993. They’re career is pretty legendary and I guess it would have to be to last as long as they have.

When you think of power pop and you look it up in the dictionary; there next to the definition will be a picture of this band. Seamlessly combining paisley pop and power pop with ease, The Posies write songs with enough oomph and melody that they’re unforgettable. Their latest album, Blood/Candy keeps this longstanding trend and despite the band obviously, being older and wiser, they still manage to turn a convincing argument that power pop still matters.

Blood/Candy is a rootsy record in the sense that there’s some maturity here and the songs aren’t quite as eclectic as they were on albums past. With that in mind, don’t let the idea of them “toning things down,” fool you, the band is still the same Posies you've grown to love throughout the twelve tracks here. The songs crunch, clap, pogo, and bury themselves in your skull as if The Posies were fresh faced new artists. That’s what makes this band so great, they continually evolve and grow but without losing sight of who they are, who they were, and who they want to be. Blood/Candy is loaded with moody melodies that at times are theatrical and at times are pure rock and roll and it is such good stuff that it never hints at the fact that The Posies have been away for five years.

From the theatrical almost film like qualities of, “Licenses to Hide,” to the choppy and ridiculously catchy pop of, “So Caroline,” the Posies do anything but disappoint. Listening to Blood/Candy is like getting reacquainted with an old friend; it’s something familiar yet interesting and new. I thoroughly enjoyed this record and for me The Posies are old friends who reintroduce themselves every once and while and it’s as if no time has passed. Power pop lives and that’s thanks to folks like The Posies.
