Polyamorous Affair Make For Strange Bedfellows
I have no idea who or what a Polyamorous Affair is or what it consists of, but I do know that this band's album, Strange Bedfellows is mysterious dark journey into the realm of art pop. Littered with dark synthesizers, cold minimal vocals, and an overall sense of foreboding Strange Bedfellows is proper synth pop the way it used to be done. Sounding something like Ultravox or your brothers old 4ad record collection in a fight with Adult., Polyamorous Affair make pop with a slant that's just so strange they had to write a song about it. Needless to say with such an off center approach and fantastic songs to match, Strange Bedfellows is a great little record.
The title, Strange Bedfellows, seems only appropriate for a record of this nature. After all, scattered amongst all this art pop are dark synths, blue eyed soul, and a sense of sexual tension that rivals the cold war. This is a slinky, sexy record that's dressed like a dominatrix and is pretty determined to have it's way with you whether you want it to or not. From the boy / girl exchanges, the soulful funky falsetto pop, or cold minimal no-wave Polyamorous Affair take an artistic flair when creating their songs and it shows on each and every one. With ten songs that essentially sound like ten artistic installations, they all offer something different, quirky, strange, and seductive.
Be it, the falsetto vocals of "Shadows," which has some sort of twisted Wild Beasts moments or the dance floor fog of, "The Avenues," Strange Bedfellows keeps you guessing in all the best ways. With more right angles and anxiety than legally allowed in music, Polymorphous Affair does indeed make Strange Bedfellows and that's ok. This is dark moody sexually nervous music that's perfect for the darkest recesses of your nearest indie disco. It's smoky, hot, and a bit perverted but it's all of those things that keeps you gripped throughout its duration. I still don't know what the heck a Polymorphous Affair is but I know I like it and want more of it as often as possible. If you like clove cigarettes, dry ice, and Love and Rockets then you will find Strange Bedfellows a necessary part of your life.
