Who would have thunk that famed stand up comic Margaret Cho could actually sing. I know that's hard to believe but it's true, Miss Cho apparently has a voice that's been itching to be released and thanks to her new album, Cho Dependent, her voice has been set free. Now, don't think that Cho Dependent isn't some serious complex record featuring German prog rock and banging techno beats. Oh no, Cho Dependent is actually a thinly disguised, not safe for work comedy record that uses more indie rock and folk pop artists to hide the fact that the sole purpose of this record is to make you openly guffaw. With stars including Tegan and Sara, Tommy Chong, Ben Lee, Brendan Benson, Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, Grant Lee Philips, and Ani DiFranco Cho Dependent certainly seems like a real record but if you listen closely you'll die of laughter as they all team up in one giant effort to make you laugh.
Cho Dependent is totally written from a female perspective but the jokes and themes are universal. Rude, slightly obnoxious, and altogether hilarious Cho Dependent is like a rapid series of five minute jokes that bear hug you until you beg for mercy. And yet, buried amongst all this rather adult-natured comedy are songs which aren't actually half bad and if you think about it, they should be pretty decent; I mean look at who plays on this record...how could it be horrible? So, here's Margaret Cho totally on fire armed with a tome of laugh out loud funny lyrics and a backing band that most of the members would be kill to be part of permanently. To say that Cho Dependent is overflowing with talent would be a massive understatement.
From the anti-work, "Calling in Stoned," to the response to Mickey Avalon's rude hits, Margaret Cho is a pistol who's firing shots like a machine gun. Cho Dependent is as funny as it is good and it's awesome to see a ragged band of musicians take up tunes in the name of good comedy. If you're in the need for a good laugh and you're not at work then Margaret Cho invites you to her, "Intervention." I laughed, I cried, I kissed my depression good bye and so will you with Cho Dependent.
