Bee Vs. Moth

Bee Vs. Moth is a pretty good name for this crazy five piece band. Hovering somewhere between chaos and jazz from the abyss, Bee Vs. Moth embraces the philosophy that more is more. In other words, this is a band that throughout the course of its album Acronyms attempts to create as much music as humanly possible no matter what the consequences. Thankfully, the consequences of such work is pretty redeeming as Acronyms, is a rather intriguing study of an indie rock-jazz head on collision.

With your standard band set up of guitar, drums and bass leading the way, the band then adds sax, trumpets, coronets, vibraphones, and all sorts of percussion to create this amazing amalgamation of rawk with the tasteful world of post bop jazz. Acronyms as a result is a complex, dense record with all kinds of distractions taking root. Sure, there are some moments that you'd swear you were listening to someone like the Pixies and then in swoops the horns and the song is just lifted to a different realm completely. It's exciting stuff that really covers all it's bases and then covers them again with a startling display of originality and musicianship. In fact, it's really rather unfair to label these guys as some sort of indie rock math combo gone wild. Bee Vs. Moth instead really are a group of quirky jazz musicians who just happen to know how to rock as much as they know how to play.

Acronyms is a celebration of jazz with an edge. This is an album that's mysterious and noisy enough to keep listeners guessing as to what's coming up next. It's rather funny how these guys can jump from atmospheric stuff to post bop to jumpy polka tunes in the drop of a hat and I think ultimately that's what makes Acronyms so entertaining. Diverse, edgy, open minded, and well traveled, Bee Vs. Moth offers something more than just another jazz record with Acronyms. Recommended stuff.
