Rakaa's Crown of Thorns

I'm not sure where exactly Decon came from or how long they've been around, but if there's any one hip hop label that stands to challenge Rhymesayers for top quality releases it's this label. Artful, well thought out, and true independent hip hop is what Decon is all about and this attitude is carried out from packaging to production to the rhymes themselves it's all top flight stuff that stands out amongst a sea of cliche's. As if to prove that point you can hear that attitude in every song on Rakaa's latest release Crown of Thorns.

Intense, dramatic, and just plain good Rakaa has his junk together and is clearly on the warpath throughout the thirteen tracks that make up Crown of Thorns. With more guest appearances then there are songs, Rakaa piles on the talent song after song and what's produced is this overwhelming wall of savvy inventiveness that just powers this record to the promised land. The rhymes here are so spot on, it's like reading a Merriam Webster Dictionary of the street and the beats here are socrisp and edgy they more often then not sound like they belong in crime dramas involving parking garages, car chases, and a lot of destruction. Crown of Thorns is a restless record that simply has no time for stereotypes, skits, or other junk...this is all killer and no filler and only serves to reinforce Decon's impressive nature.

Rakaa impressed me here...the rhymes, the beats, the packaging...this is a statement of intent as much as it is a hip hop record. Rakaa is a force to reckoned with and with a posse of contributors to back him up there is no stopping this guy. My advice is get in on the Rakaa party early because this is one party that's going to blow up...and blow up quickly.
