Cloud Cult Are Light Chasers

Cloud Cult have quietly been making a name for themselves for years and they've been recording albums for just as long. Their eighth album, Light Chasers draws its inspiration from the joy and concern of rebirth. It's a matter that's close to the bands collective heart and has affected several members personally. Now, over the course of this 56 minute album the band tackle the very idea head on and embrace it as much as they fear it.

Headlong into battle with a textural pallet that's utterly gargantuan, Cloud Cult populate their songs with a variety of instrumentation and sound collages that give them a certain about of depth that's just about unrivalled. From prog rock moments that channel their inner Rush, to moments where you'd swear that Arcade Fire was possessing them, Cloud Cult fear nothing and are unafraid to try anything in the name of making a better song. After eight albums, that's kind of their prerogative to be experimental and write music that they find both challenging and sonically significant. For the most part, Light Chasers is quite significant. In fact, it's quite easy to say that it's downright enjoyable.

With all this indie/prog/rock/dance crossover happening across the album, it's hard to believe that the band are able to maintain a level of consistency but they do and each of the sixteen songs on this record are a reflection of that. This is a band that clearly have figured out the way to write massive, nearly epic, large scale tunes that hover around the art pop sphere. A song like, "You'll Be Bright, (Invocation pt. 1)," starts out slow and explodes into something that is so bright that the rays of sunshine were coming out of my speakers. What an awesome song. From there things get sweet with, "You Were Born," which is almost like a parental lullaby for a baby.

Light Chasers is an impressive effort and well, it should be. At this point Cloud Cult can just about write records like this in their sleep and still make them sound amazing. That's what they've done here and it's an enjoyable large scale album that's just about all encompassing. If you need a little affirmation in your life, check out Light Chasers it should do the trick...in a prog/art/rock stylee.
