The Bell Bring Great Heat

If you're The Bell you kind of expect all kinds of drama to plague your work; especially when you don't even live in the same city as the other members. You see, this internet/post band created their latest album, Great Heat, without ever being in the same room together so it only makes sense that when it came to put the finishing touches on the thing all sorts of arguments erupted, breakups, etc; chalk it up to doing things long distance. And while the duo probably broke up about a 100 times during the last month of putting this record together, they were persistent enough to actually see the record released and this was a very good thing.

Great Heat in a word is amazing. This Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, New Order hybrid via Sweden is so ridiculously infectious that you might just need a class 5 spacesuit to avoid its overpowering nature. Each of the ten songs on this record is a hit in the making. With hooks the size of Jupiter and choruses that are so memorable they make your ABC's look like string theory, Great Heat is pure gold. It's truly amazing that a record created outside of a studio by two individuals that never met could actually be this good...but I suppose that if the Postal Service could make it work these guys should be able to as well.

Great Heat is easily one of my favorite albums of 2011. It is indie dance done right comple with perpetual grooves, a slightly dark heart, and songs that are inescapable. Drama or not, if The Bell can continue to write songs of this quality they might not ever be allowed to be in the same room together or even be friends.
