Y La Bamba
Well, Y La Bamba's album, Lupon, marks a first for me. This album marks the first time, that I can recall, that I do not like something on Tender Loving Empire. The Orgeonian record label/shop has a stellar track record of providing listners with amazing indie rock that never ceases to bring enjoyment. But, their 100% pure gold raiting has taken a bit of a hit with Y La Bamba.
You see, Lupon, is a wandering moany folk record that seems to go on forever and sounds more like a group of disembodied spirits than a band. These group of folkies try their best to bring out the Cat Power qualities in their songs but instead seem to lose the plot and end up wallowing in a puddle of dispossessed spirits. I wanted to enjoy this record, I tried to enjoyed this record, but the meandering vocals as well as the meandering musicianship just made it so hard to like that I had to walk away.
There might be some good ideas lost amongst the moans and sighs, but I couldn't find them no matter how hard I tried. This was just a bit too difficult to listen to and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get used to the sounds they were generating. Sorry Y La Bamba, but the sound of spirits roaming old creaky homes set to music just isn't my cup of tea. It's not that I don't believe in ghosts, but I already have enough of them in my 81 year old home as it is. Thanks for trying though.
