Ryat's Avant Gold

Who would have thought that Ambien and the like would have such a big influence on today's independent music scene? Not me, and yet, it appears to have had a significant influence on it as so many bands sound like they've yet to be awoken from a dream. Amongst the latest bands to emerge from their slumber is Ryat.

This dynamic duo create psychedelic dream pop that sounds as if Bjork were lost in Alice In Wonderland. It's disjointed, gauzy stuff that finds melodies in the dark recesses of your mind. They then use those melodies to brainwash you into listening to the record repeatedly. The record is very good at creating hypnotizing atmospherics with odd beat arrangements and the rather child-like vocals of Christina Ryat.

Their nearly catatonic-like album, Avant Gold repeats the atmospheric process nine times over and occasionally get a bit weird...or should I say, even weirder. It's fantastic stuff that is so deeply entranced in itself that coming back to reality doesn't seem to be much of an option. Between the otherworldly sounds, the broken beats, and the trance inducing vocals Avant Gold will overtake your mind with it's songs and sounds. REM sleep has never sounded so good.
