I Was Totally Destroying It's Preludes

I Was Totally Destroying It is yet another band that has post hardcore connotations but in fact are so far away from that genre you can hear them pogohing away. On their latest album, Preludes, IWTDI so fully embrace the idea of power pop they squeeze the life out of it. This is a five piece band that has very slowly and quietly developed into one heck of a band. In fact, the progression from their previous effort to Preludes is so fantastic that it's stunned me.

While I Was Totally Destroying It has always had that melodic pop punk thing down, they've now refined it and honed it to a sharp deadly point. The songs that make up Preludes are so strong, so melodic and irresistible that they're almost impossible to escape from. With huge boy/girl vocal tradeoffs, soaring melodies, harmonic riffs from the gods, and production that makes every song sound like it is gold plated, this is a record that's more than fantastic. What's fascinating about this record, though, is that as the title implies the songs here are preludes to something more. That something more is their next album, Vexations, due out later this year and if this record hints at something greater, I can only imagine what that will sound like. That’s an overwhelming proposition.

I Was Totally Destroying It is the face of power pop today and whether it's this album or their next one, these guys are able to create melodic rays of sunshine with ease. Sounding remarkably chipper with the songs to match, you can't help but love everything this band does. Preludes is a great album and I'm left wondering how they could possibly top it...I guess we'll see if it’s possible when Vexations is released later this year.
