AgesAndAges Love Harmony
Portland based AgesandAges haven’t been around nearly that long, but their rustic folk rock sounds as if it could be. Utilizing loads of traditional influences, giving them a sense of rock and roll, and making it all sound like a giant sing along, AgesandAges' album, Alright, You Restless, is probably the most fun you can have around a campfire without actually having one.
With seven voices all sung into one microphone Alright, You Restless sounds like the album Polyphonic Spree always threatened to make but were too big to do it. After listening to Alright, You Restless it makes so much sense that this group of minstrels come from Oregon. I mean, this record is such woodsy fun and sounds like a coed Boy Scout / Girl Scout mixer in the middle of the summer. The albums goodness and its ability to rock doesn't come from its guitars or percussion, but the vocal harmonies that sweep each song out of the woods and into the sunshine. AgesandAges do such a good job of staying in tune and keeping a melody with all those voices that you totally forget that you’re listening to some strange version of folk music.
Alright, You Restless took me by surprise. When I first heard this I had no idea what I was listening to. By about the third song, I was enthralled by this Beach Boys in the woods kind of thing. Now, I want to go camping, build a campfire, make smores and sing these songs....thanks guys.
