Lovett's Highway Collection

Lovett is not only a man but a twelve member circus that tours the country with a song in their hearts and a bit of theater in their minds. This dramatic, sweeping group resides in a world where Coldplay and Elbow are the moody rulers of the world and their songs are seen as anthems the world over. Lovett is a moody bunch but within those emotions is a vivid imagination that allows the songs that Lovett and his circus come up with to run free and take their own paths. This is especially true on their album Highway Collection where it's as if the name of the record was meant to be reality.

Alternating between theatrical songs, sweeping pop songs, soaring ballads and artistic statements much of Highway Collection plays out like a series of scenes. It is interesting listening that spends much of its time in hushed tones. Only occasionally, and closer to the end, does it seem like Lovett wakes up and the scenes get more exciting...the uber tense, "Eye of the Storm," is a perfect example of this excitement especially when a visual element is added to this (find this video on youtube...it's amazing).

Highway Collection is certainly an intriguing record that demands close listening. Loaded with pop hits, this record is not. But, one suspects that Lovett and his circus like it this way...and you probably will too.
