Company of Thieves Are Running From A Gamble

Company of Thieves are one of the more intriguing commercially viable bands out there right now. No other band probably mixes nu-rock with bluesy soul better than these guys (if any other bands do at all) and it all because of the powerful vocal chops of Genevieve Schatz. Leading her band through radio friendly territory via Memphis soul, this overwhelming voice is the very definition of power and it's easy to see why Company of Thieves are held in such high regard.

Teetering somewhere between emo-ish pop and soulful bluesy rock, Running From A Gamble offers musical intrigue that demands to be heard. This coming of age tale about a thirteen year old girl is anything but cliché and while there are moments that undoubtedly could be, Schatz's vocals simply do not allow that to happen. With vocals soaring, moods changing, guitars crunching, confidence building and songs applying themselves like parasites, Running From A Gamble is almost impossible to run from.

Clearly at her best when she finds her inner soul-sister, Schatz really brings it home when things get soulful. Things work so well on songs like, "Syrup," and, "Tallulah," Company of Thieves should probably consider ditching the distortion and invest in a horn section. She's just that good. Running From A Gamble as a result is good stuff. It's entertaining because it's different and brings something cool to the table and with bands like these that’s what you’re looking for. If you like your Motown AND your Saves the Day, you'll find Company of Thieves the kind of company you'll want to keep.
