Pet Ghost Project's Winter Variations

Brooklyn based Pet Ghost Project are an interesting combination of musicians who take post rock and throw it for a loop. Rather than getting lost in a sea of musical wanderings and endless noodling, Pet Ghost Project instead simply write complete songs that just happen to not have lyrics. Jumpy, jittery, and filled with all kinds of energy, their album, Winter Variations is a record that while complex sounds like an album that for some strange reason forgot to include the vocals. While much of Winter Variations is complex and filled with enough riffage and time shifts to make a professional musician weep, the record is surprisingly listenable and pretty darn enjoyable.

Even when the band does find its voice on two occasions, the record still maintains its precarious balance between making mind boggling music with an air of accessibility about it. Winter Variations seems like perfect title for this record simply because each of the six songs here take on a completely different personality. Whether they are variations on a theme or variations of post rock is irrelevant because Pet Ghost Project forces you to throw out all your preconceived notions. While there is definitely some post rock tendencies at work throughout Winter Variations, the band also allows jazz fusion, screamo, and dream pop to work their way into their sound. Picture Red Sparrowes in a fight with Tortoise and the Album Leaf and you kind of have Pet Ghost Project in a nutshell.

Winter Variations is an intricate adventure into what four energetic musicians can create when given half the chance. Pet Ghost Project are an impressive band that fear nothing and have a palette of sound that is rich, lush, and seemingly unending. If there is a way for Pet Ghost Project to work a new sound into their repertoire, it's a pretty sure bet it will be there. Winter Variations is adventurous, entertaining, and perplexing but that's what makes this record worth listening to and listen to it you should. If you love your post rock with a bit of tunefulness then Winter Variations is the perfect audio experiment for you.
