Eskimo Kiss Records was started on the winnings from a trip to Las Vegas. With four grand in hand upon arriving home, the founders of the label decided it was the right time to start putting out records and not waste the money on something else. That was way back in 2000. With money in hand and the idea in their head, Eskimo Kiss didn't really have a plan beyond the first release and never really developed one over the next decade but somehow through all sorts of events including divorces, moves, and losing close friends they managed to prosper over that time. And now, here it is ten years later, the label has released 21 records, and decided to call it a day culminating in this it's final release, Let's Do Art and Be Best Friends.
Composed of seventeen tracks, Let's Do Art and Be Best Friends, runs the gamut of just about every sound indie rock could hope to make. From jangly pop to synth indie dance and everything in between the compilation brings the label to a close with about 16.9 tracks being fantastic. Let's Do Art and Be Best Friendsis the perfect summation of all the success and independence that Eskimo Kiss brought to the table and the perfect tribute to everyone that contributed. Scattered amongst the tracks are singles by Gerty, Audio Explorations, Lookwell, and even Jacksonville's own Tracy Shedd.
In listening to this record it's obvious that Eskimo Kiss was a labor of love and that the artists who appeared on the label were an important part of the labels family. They may not have made heaps of cash, or even recouped the four grand they started on but the artists and label are pretty much the definition of honesty and integrity in music. Let's Do Art and Be Best Friends is a fantastic record that couldn't be any better if it tried. It's sad to see Eskimo Kiss go, but if it has to then Let's Do Art and Be Best Friends is the perfectsend off. As essential as water, you should definitely pick up a copy of Let's Do Art and Be Best Friends.
