Jacksonville's Eightdays are the latest in a long line of bands from this town who have mastered the art of the big rawk song and seemed destined for big things. Pieced together from the remnants of other bands from around the country as well as local musicians, Eightdays have a sound that's not necessarily Jacksonvillilan but something greater than the sum of it's parts. Taking bits and bobs from punk, emo, pop, and a dash of metal Eightdays create sharp edged songs that are laced with melodcisim and a fairly decent level of intricacy that allow their songs to sound like they were shot out of a harmonic cannon. Their album, This Could Be About You, is a very well done record that is certain to expand their horizons and their audience.
With about six of the nine songs totally ready for radio, Eightdays clearly sound as if they've put these songs together with German-like precision and care. The tunes that make up This Could Be About You are air tight and so harmonically convergent that your ears may split upon listening them. These guys are good, it's as simple as that and whether or not you like their brand of commercially viable tuneage, you can't help but admire the quality of musicianship and production that runs rampant throughout their record. "In The Moment," for example is a jumpy melodic treat that soars on a chorus that's worth about a million dollars. The tune is ridiculously hypnotic and so catchy it makes Botchulism seem wimpy. Much of This Could Be About You is like that; the band's precision and careful creation of each song helps plummet the album into the realms of scientific sound experiments gone write.
While I don't really care for their ballady moments, they're so achingly huge you can almost see the lighters swaying as the tunes work their way into some lovelorn girls heart. It's epic stuff that's clearly headed for big things and anyone who has ever listened to the radio should be able to spot that. Eightdays may not be the most original band on the planet, but they are clearly a fantastic band who know that emotional songs and rigid, uncompromising musicianship are the keys to stepping things up to the next level. This Could Be About Youis an impressive album from a band that Jacksonville should be proud of. From the ironically titled, "Party Hard," to the stompy and explosive, "Crazy Nights," Eightdays are a band you'll be hearing more of either locally or somewhere on the radio, TV, or shop. Simply put Eightdays might just be the next big rawk band to call this place home. Good luck to them.
