40 Watt Hype Gives A Push

I have to admit I was a bit put off by the cover of 40 Watt Hype. Judging by the typography and design, I totally figured these guys were going to be something straight out of the garage on a Vespa scooter in a Quadrophenia stylee. Unfortunately, what 40 Watt Hype turned out to be was a knock off version of Black Eyed Peas without a Fergie at the helm. Soulful, somewhat funky, and a bit of a let down 40 Watt Hype's album, Push wants to be so much more than it actually is.

Push is the sound of a band with a lot of yearning and not much experience. The songs the band comes up with aren't bad, but they're not quite ready to conquer the charts yet. They're funky at the all the right times, but they seem just a little bit too cliche for their own good. While the Black Eyed Peas are the very definition of cliche, the one thing they're able to do is create songs with hooks so large that escape is impossible. Love them or hate them, even your grandmother knows, "Let’s Get the Party Started." Songs like that are what 40 Watt Hype wants to achieve, and they're well on their way, but they just need to get a bit further away from sounding like everything else that sounds like the Peas.

Push is loaded with potential and with just the right amount of push (and polish), there's no doubt that 40 Watt Hype will be getting their own party started. Until then, this is a band to keep an eye on.
