Lawrence of Arabia Chant's Darling

Lawrence Arabia is the alias of one James Milne, a solo artist born 1981 in Christchurch, New Zealand. James has already established a rich musical resume as a former member of the Brunettes, the Ruby Suns, and a touring member of Okkervil River. Somewhere amongst the schedules of all those bands, Lawrence Arabia managed to find time for his own work; something he had wanted to do for ages. That patience has paid off. Coming to fruition in the form of an album by the name of Chant Darling it almost seems like James should have been Lawrence Arabia from the get go.

Melodic, sunshiny, and in line behind so many other classic Kiwi bands, Lawrence Arabia is the classic Flying Nun sound run through Postcard Records. Think sparkly, springy indie pop that's dominated by exuberant guitars, harmonies that would make the Beach Boys blush, and songs that are the very definition of great pop and you have what Chant Darling is all about. It's an album that's overjoyed to be heard and given half the chance would give you a big bear hug. Lawrence Arabia have really come up with something that's filled with pop bliss and really quite a tasty treat.

As lush as New Zealand itself and with a sense of irony that almost seems too British for it's own good, Chant Darlingis a gorgeous witty record. If you can imagine Hefner in the land of Middle Earth you've pretty much gotten Lawrence Arabia down pat. From the hilarious sexual tension of, "The Beautiful Young Crew," to the nearly Elephant Six psychedelic pop of, "Eye A," Chant Darlingis easily one of the best indie pop albums to emerge over the last couple years. Rich with a dark sense of humor and a gift of great songs, Chant Darlingis probably the best thing James Milne has ever been part of. Here's hoping Lawrence Arabia stays around a while...you know, the real one saved a people...maybe this one can save indie pop.
