Pelican Know What We Need

Pelican are the one metal band you would never expect to be a metal band. Call me crazy, but a band named Pelican just isn't very metalif you know what I mean. But alas, they are, but metal cut from a different cloth. For no other band around today can whip instrumental metal around like these boys can. They're an impressive, artistically brilliant bunch who challenge the very notions of what is metal and they always come through with flying colors. Their latest album, What We All Come To Need continues that winning streak without question.

What We All Come To Need houses within it a mind-numbing set of progressive metal that's as technical as it is melodic. With the number of riffs approaching the same amount as the federal deficit it's easy to see why these guys are so rooted in endless jam sessions. Crunchy but never too heavy Pelican balance the light and the dark with precision. This is one group that knows the definition of yin and yang and each of the songs on What We All Come To Need illustrate just how good they are at it. With riffs that soar and riffs that pummel What We All Come To Need is like a tide of heavy metal ebbing and receding constantly. It's truly awesome stuff that needs no words to express it's ideas or concepts; a skill that requires massive talent.

While the band does dabble in a few vocal moments towards the end, 98% of What We All Come To Need features nothing but amazing musicianship that will have guitarists everywhere trying to figure it all out. Pelican are truly amazing at what they do and you get a sense that they love doing it all throughout What We All Come To Need. From the melodic blissfulness of the title track to the churning fire-storm of riffage on, "Strung Up From The Sky," What We All Come To Need is an amazing record that says more than most metal albums could ever hope to. Pelican are indeed not your normal metal band and What We All Come To Need is anything but a normal metal album.
