Discobiscuits Are Tasty

Despite the name, The Disco Biscuits are not a band of ecstasy munching techno boffins who make music to get luv'd up to. Oh no, this band of Philadelphians take a strange blend of chill out and jam band music to get some sort of strange electro tinged pop that sounds nothing like the sum of their influences. Their new album, Planet Anthem, is the result of a three year excursion in exposing themselves to as much as possible and working on songs with as many producers, songwriters, and outside musicians as they could round up. The results of all this diversity and exposure is an album that's ridiculously cool in every sense of the word.

Coming off something like Ian Brown and the Stereo MC's imprisoned in a chill out lounge with the most beautiful people on Terra Firma, Planet Anthem, is a seductive groove laden ride through the weekend. Bright, dancey, and heading off in more directions than you can count, all at once, The Disco Biscuits have created an album that embraces the principles of being a jam band but bashes that idea over the head with a series of keyboards and beats and then throws it on the dancefloor. While The Disco Biscuits may have at one time been a pure jam band, nothing on Planet Anthem even hints at that past. In fact, if you didn't know their history you would never know that they were remotely connected to that scene.

Planet Anthem is really a great dancerecord as opposed to anything else. The songs are instantaneously catchy, designed to roll across the dance floor, and will drive your speakers absolutely bonkers. While this isn't full on techno mayhem, they do keep things constantly moving at a steady pace which, allows each of the grooves to settle in nicely and make themselves at home. From the electro influenced, "Uber Glue," to the nearly jazzy chill of, "Widgets," the band ups the ante on what a jam band can and should do. Psychedelic, beguiling, and fully designed to make you move, The Disco Biscuits have created an album that's simply too good to pass up.
