Perfect's French Connection
Nothing quite puts the heat back into the winter quite like reggae. The genre's tropical vibes have the uncanny ability to transport you miles away from wherever you are and with the winter we're having here in Jacksonville, that's like the best possible thing. Sure, we live in Florida but with the temperatures dipping into the lower 30's it sure doesn't feel like it. As if from a dream of the weather we once had, Perfect's French Connection whisks us back to warm summer sun that we all know and love.
With a whole host of guest appearances and collaborations, French Connectionis a fantastic combination of reggae and dance hall vibes that as one of it's songs says is a, "Ruff Time." With songs about marijuana, Haile Selassie, love and all the usual reference points of the genre there's not a lot of new material covered here but it's still pretty decent stuff. I mean when you think about it, the genre pretty much centers around the same riff repeated into infinity and it's up to each individual artist to make his own impact outside of that. Thankfully, the ruff nature of Perfect is far from perfect and it gives French Connection an edge to it that steers it close of the kind of reggae frat boys listen to.
An epic album with sixteen tracks, this is a smoky, hazy night at the club or on the beach with lord knows what in your hand. From the slow burning, "Mi Na Cut My Dread," to Sizzla's guest appearance on, "Absolute Blessings," this is a reggae lovers winter delight. French Connectionwill probably leave you depressed. After all, with all these songs about anything but work sun splashed with vibes of doing nothing it's hard not to be. Your summer soundtrack just arrived...too bad it's four months early.
