Mean Jeans Aren't Serious
In listening to the Mean Jeans latest album, Are You Serious?I was left wondering...do people still listen to three chord punk rock? I mean, think about it, even Green Day who used to be the pop punk three chord flag carrier has moved on. So do people still listen to this stuff? Anyway, that being said, here are the Mean Jeans playing the same exact stuff that made the Ramones one of the most influential bands on the planet and doing so rather convincingly. I guess people still do listen.
How much are the Mean Jeans in love with the Ramones? Well, it's so bad you'd swear that Joey Ramone was resurrected and was singing on each of the tracks that make up Are You Serious?. It's frightening at times how similar Mean Jeans are and I'm not necessarily sure that's a good thing. I mean, even as a metal kid, I respected The Ramones and realized you just kind of left them alone for that reason. So I'm not sure if Are You Serious? is a good thing or a bad thing; I guess it depends on how much you miss the original.
Sloppy, speedy, and sounding exactly like the song before it, much of the material on Are You Serious? kind of wears out it's welcome by about the third or fourth song. The record just does nothing to hold your attention for very long because of just how similar every song sounds. Are You Serious? is a goofy, silly, record that sounds like it was recorded in the 25 minutes it takes to play through. Are You Serious? answers itself with a resounding no, because it obviously isn't serious at all. That being the case, if you like three chord pop punk you'll probably find this entertaining, but if you're like me and seek something a bit more musical you will have had enough by about the fifth song. Sorry guys.
