Dignan Brings Cheaters and Thieves To Jacksonville
The strangely named Texas band, Dignan, are a moody band of troubadours who have toured endlessly since 2007 and have slowly built up their fanbase outside of their home territory by playing just about anywhere you can find electricity. In 2009 they slowed down their relentless schedule of touring and took time to record their follow up to their much lauded The Guest EP. Entitled Cheaters and Thieves, their debut is a gauzy, grey, and temperamental effort that's anything but upbeat.
Sounding something like a terminally depressed Arcade Fire, Dignan create arty pop with a tarnished edge to it. It's ethereal stuff that sounds like a cool breeze on a winter's day. It's chilling, stark stuff that hangs around and seems to go on forever. This isn't a bad thing. In fact, the drifting nature of Dignan's songs shows off their desire to be sprawling, haunting, and breathtaking. They do a pretty good job of it as the so much of Cheaters and Thieves seems unearthly, spooky, and at times downright scary.
From the nearly whispered, "You're My Witness," to the suspenseful, "A Fool," Cheaters and Thieves is a dramatic celestial record that lingers with you long after it's gone. Not necessarily a memorable record, Cheaters and Thieveslingers with you in an almost disturbing manner as it's impact is very subtle. Dignan have created a record that will stir the soul and might just give you goose bumps. For a record that's on the verge of being clinically depressed that's a pretty good thing.
If you like meandering songs that waft in and out of your consciousness quietly than you couldn't ask for a better record than Dignan's Cheaters and Thieves. You can hear them and see for yourself just how chilling these guys really are. Dignan will be playing the UNF Amphitheater on November 5th for an all ages show. Make sure you wear tinfoil on your head because if you're not careful the band might just take over your ears and your mind.
