Bachelorette and Her Electric Family
Bachelorette's Annabel Alpers has a family of synthesizers, keyboards, and computers that keep her company where ever she may roam. These machines are her friends and her companions and allow her to be the creative chanteuse that she's become. Over the course of her tenure with the machines Bachelorette has released one EP, a debut album, and My Electric Family which has just been released.
Marking a noted departure from previous efforts, My Electric Familyhas been expanded to include humans into the mix. While the non-mechanical members of the group play a subtle role, their influence on the recording is noticeable as this album sounds a bit more organic than Annabel's previous efforts. What's that all mean? Well, My Electric Familysounds something like a strange Bjork record if she were a member of Ladytron and they recorded all their records at half speed and then gave them to Bat For Lashes to play around with.
My Electric Familyis filled with lethargic sci-fi lullabies that are ethereal, spacey, and just a bit psychedelic. The record is a bit weird but never loses sight of itself. While things do get lost in the haze occasionally, Annabel and her family of devices often circle back around to make things sound harmonically pleasing. The fact that she does most of this all by herself is truly impressive as she repeatedly shows herself to be an amazing songwriter, programmer, and master of melody. My Electric Family is a strange twisted record that sounds like a group of depressed robots looking for happiness through song and that's what makes this recording so entertaining.
If 2001 A Space Odyssey were made today this would be it's soundtrack. Filled with a sense of confusion and expressionism, Bachelorette have created a record that's all about the relationship between man, technology, and the forms of escape that go along with that. My Electric Family is a wonderfully blissed out record whose songs are charming, celestial and otherworldly and should find their way into your lives.
