Wet Cookies Offer Soul Protection
Wet Cookies, founded by Axel Hirn and Björn Klein started out as a handful of Viennese musicians who shared a common affection for jazz, dub and electronic music. Two years and two albums later, what started out as an instrumental group exploring the realms of jazz and dub has grown into a massive collective of nineteen singers and a whole host of musicians on a quest to make amazing music. Their quest continues as does their range of sounds on their latest album, Soul Protection.
Soul Protection is a smooth soul and jazz record whose downtempo grooves and seductive vocals hover around the outer perimeters of trip hop but never quite fall into that territory. The record is a light, airy affair that flows like a gentle summer breeze. Horns ring out, guitars gently play, vocals soothe and the laid back grooves take us on a sultry sexy trip through the world of nu-soul.
As with Wet Cookies last effort, Earthling, the band continues to be on the same page and feed off of each others energy and musicianship. The level of professionalism and proficiency demonstrated by this combo allows the many guest vocalists on Soul Protectionto shine brighter than the North Star. Their vocals glisten off the gentle swaying rhythms that steer each song alluringly through each song. Wet Cookies have come a long way since Earthling and you can hear it on each and every song here.
Soul Protection is an impressive soul inflicted jazz record that never disappoints. From stirring ballads to the upfront grooves of the more upfront tunes, Wet Cookies have made leaps and bounds in not only musicianship but songwritng as well. Soul Protection's strength lies not only in Wet Cookies ability to write moving musical passages but their ability to allow each individual performer to shine whether it be an instrumentalist of one of the featured vocalists and that's why this album is so good.
