Total Babe's Heatwave
Total Babe are actually not one girl, but a bunch of teens led by one Clara Salyer who at 16 picked up the acoustic guitar to just noodle around with while not playing in her school's Jazz band. Before she knew it, she was actually opening for bands and then putting together a band which would become Total Babe. With Jordan Gatesmith on guitar and Lizzie Carolan on violin making up the rest of Total Babe, the band began to write and write and write and play a bit too. All this writing and playing eventually led to the recording of their debut EP, Heatwave.
Shy, jangly, and twee Heatwave is the soundtrack to your first crush and all the sentimentality that goes along with it. Sounding like a much younger Camera Obscura, the band clearly knows how to write wonderful shuffly pop songs that will tug at your heartstrings. It's truly awesome to hear these kids and know that they already have that much talent and songwriting ability in the can. Total Babe might be young and innocent, but their songs hint at a maturity far beyond their years and any of the six songs on Heatwave will confirm this. They are an impressive lot and I love their folksy take on twee pop because it's so pure, genuine and unspoiled. They might be kids, and might only have one record under the collective belts, but they already know how to write a great song and after one listen to Heatwave I think you'll agree.
