This Providence Wonder Who Are You Now
Seattle via Australia's This Providence are among the current crop of emo bands that are developing their sound into something, while sounding easy to latch onto, are far more complicated then you would think. Their latest album, Who Are You Now is a massive effort that sounds crisp, bright, and filled with songs that are destined for great things.
Who Are You Nowis a record that has it's roots in emo, but has far greater aspirations with pop hooks and choruses that even desperate housewives could remember. This Providence are clearly a band that know how to string a song together and make it stick and they do that repeatedly throughout Who Are You Now whether it be a ballad or anthem. It really should come as no surprise though, because they spent much of last year gelling as a band and creating material that they thought would be unique, honest, and have substance. While many of the songs may not, in fact, be all that unique, This Providence are working on and developing a sound that veers from the standard emo template and embraces other aesthetics; thus far it seems as things are going pretty well.
Armed with super sharp production and even sharper songs, how could Who Are You Now fail to deliver? It pretty much couldn't and with songs as polished and dance floor friendly as "This is the Real Thing," it's easy to see why. Who Are You Now is an energetic and frenetic listen that consistantly delivers the goods and shows that This Providence is much more than just another emo band.
