Superchunk Returns!
Six years ago was the last time any one had heard from the legendary indie rock legends Superchunk. These legends of the Chapel Hill indie-rock scene had so much else on their plate that they could have just called it a day, but they didn't and now after a six year hiatus, they're back! Yes, you read that right Superchunk has returned and their latest EP, Leaves In The Gutter proves that you don't have to teach an old dog new tricks.
Leaves In The Gutter essentially picks up where the band left off in 2003 and blazes a trail of sharp, raw, and rawkus indie rock that sounds as if the band were stuck in some strange 90's parallel dimension where their classic No Pokey For Kitty played on repeat. Leaves In The Gutteris an awesome hook filled blast of post grunge that's so well played it's seriously hard to believe these guys took six years off. Three of the five songs here, "Learned To Surf," "Misfits and Mistakes," and "Knock, Knock, Knock" are fast paced spiky tunes that blow by you like a runaway train. The other two songs, "Screw It Up," and an acoustic version of "Learned To Surf," show a more sublime side to the band and almost sound like The Replacements meet The Lemonheads at the Cat's Cradle in North Carolina. It's all really good stuff and if you're a long time fan of the band this little EP is something to be super excited about.
Leaves In The Gutter shows that Superchunk are in fine form and that despite so much happening to them outside of the band over the last six years, they've still got it. Listening to this EP is like eating comfort food; it's always a pleasurable experience and it always makes you feel good. That being said, Leaves In The Gutterwill warm the cockles of existing fans hearts and may just win a few new ones over. Superchunk, it's so good to have you back.
