MSTRKRFT Unleashes The Fist Of God
Fist of God is the highly anticipated follow up to MSTRKRFT's massively successful 2006 debut The Looksand features contributions from N.O.R.E., Ghostface Killa, Bay Area hip hop icon e-40, Freeway, Lil' Mo and even John Legend. It's a look back to the group's raw influences of punk rock but with an obvious nod to house music from Chicago and techno from Detroit. That being said, this record is far from stuck in the 80's. In fact, Fist of God, pushes things forward by throwing out what's cool in contemporary dance music and doing what they feel is necessary to fill the floor.
Is what they've done any good? The answer would be a resounding yes. Fist of God is a massively hot, sweaty, sleazy party that never slows down. MSTRKRFT's brilliant blending of hip hop and electro into one all crushing beast of beats and bangers is unheralded and about three songs into this record you just kind of know that there isn't going to be one bad song on Fist of God. And there isn't one, as MSTRKRFT realized early on in the production of this record that they needed electronic battle weapons that would level massive crowds into discofied dance floor dust. As luck would have it, they've filled their need and constructed eleven such weapons of dance destruction.
When "Bounce," explodes out of your stereo and N.O.R.E. blasts out, "All I do is party," you know that MSTRKRFT and their cohorts do indeed and that this record is the soundtrack to that party. Fist of God is a brilliantly brutal record whose beats are relentless and whose songs are mesmerizing. These guys have come a long way from their debut; since then they've developed some absolutely sick production skills and an learned a ton more about how to create bangers on demand. While it might have taken MSTRKRFT three years to put Fist of God after one listen you'll realize it was worth it as this has to be one of the best dance records of 2009.
