Jamie T Grows Up On Chaka Demus
Jamie T's Chaka Demus EPis a short and sweet single that sees him growing out of his bedsit hip hop phase and into a proper songwriter. As if to demonstrate that point, the title track alone is pure pop gold with a chorus that once it finds its way between your ears will never ever leave. Taking a more focused slant at his songs, Jamie T still has that lo-fi approach that made is debut album such a pure and enjoyable record, but now he's armed himself with a ton of experience and far more knowledge on how to make his songs work for him.
Of the four songs that are on Chaka Demus EP the title track stands out as my personal favorite, but the nearly Arctic Monkeys-ish, "Forget Me Not," is a quirky little song with a female lead vocal and some sort of twisted world music feel. It's intriguing stuff to say the least. "Planning Spontancity," on the other hand is a purely acoustic song that is essentially a lightly plucked guitar, some humming, and Jamie's voice leading the way. It's a tune that almost sounds medieval. Chaka Demus is wrapped up by the folk hoedown that is, "When They Are Gone," which is a speedy little number that's jumpy and really quite good.
You might have only given us four songs, but Jamie sir, it's nice to have you back. Here's to the new album being equally as good.
