I don't normally do DVD reviews but I get sent things sometimes that don't normally fit into the record review category. Final Flesh is one of those things. Released by Drag City Records the movie is anything but a mainstream movie. In fact, Final Fleshborders on the obscene. It's an interesting, if not difficult thing to watch because of just how bizarre it is. Produced in four parts, with a script written by Vernon Chatman it was submitted to four unique film production companies that work exclusively in specialized adult content to see what they would do with the script. Needless to say the film isn't the feel good family film of the winter, and in fact it's more likely the family nightmare come to life.
Disturbing, raw, and really kind of bad, the movie really comes off as more of a bizarre social prank than anything else. Watching Final Fleshis like watching a bizarre inside joke that someone forgot to tell the producers of the film about. It's a twisted take on comedy and will make people uncomfortable but you get the sense that's exactly the point Vernon Chatman is aiming for. As the literature that accompanied the DVD states, few who see this will sit on the fence. Few should. Final Flesh is a confrontation and contradiction that deserves its day in (kangaroo) court (and that's just where it might wind up).
Uneasy, avant garde, and really not entertaining Final Flesh still is intriguing watching. Watch it with one hand over your eyes or watch it without any filter at all and the results will be the same, Final Flesh will freak you out.
