Dragonette Are Fixin To Thrill
Dragonette's latest album, Fixin to Thrilllives up to it's title with a day-glo sparkly pop album that's as much a guilty pleasure as it is pure pop perfection. Pitched as some sort of edgy electro band back in 2007 with their debut album Galore, what was hidden beneath the covers was a brilliant pop band that had the ability to reel in listeners a mile away. Their approach was pure and simple...sexy seductive pop that was just plain good. Fixin to Thrillis no different as it's just as slinky and provocative if not more so.
While the band has toned down some of the electro overtones that were clearly present over their debut, they've upped the hook quotient by about ten. Playing out something like a beguilingly female version of New Order with Lily Allen and Goldfrapp, Dragonette obviously have tapped into the proper pop circuit and are utilizing it for all it's worth. This is a great thing as every song here is solid gold. When vocalist Martina Sorbara saunters her way across a track it's as if the song was coated with sugar and goes down with a rush. In fact, Fixin to Thrillis like the aural equivalent of sugar coated sugar; sweet, tasty, and oh so irresistible.
In listening to Fixin to Thrillit's hard to believe that Martina was once a singer/songwriter with just a guitar, but she was. Now, this diva in the making keeps her husband at arms length and melts hipster's hearts whever she goes. Dragonette are a guilty pleasure that you don't need to feel guilty about. Infused with the spunk of Kylie, the wit of Sophie, and the songs of Aitken, Stock, and Waterman Dragonette are the very definition of pure pop goodness and like their debut album, Fixin to Thrillis the very definition of pure pop perfection and one of my favorites of the last year.
