Bellflur and Last Quarter of the 20th Century Blues

Washington DC's Bellflur is easily one of more unique bands to come out of the Capitol. Their latest EP, Last Quarter of the 20th Century Bluesalmost sounds like it was beamed in from that time period. Well, to be honest it sounds more like it came from 1990-1995 and comes off as a cross between Radiohead, Lush, and the Cocteau Twins. With dreamy melodies, swirling guitars, and gauzy atmospherics Last Quarter of the 20th Century Blues is a moody shadowy treat that's kind of disturbing in all the best ways.

Dramatic and haunting, Last Quarter of the 20th Century Blues is as bleakly beautiful as a winters day and with melodies soaring and off beat rhythms leading the way, Bellflur mysteriously wind through each of the songs here. This is a band that revels in obscurity and obtuseness and whether it's the drawn out, "Bright Lights," or the fragile beauty of the title track, Last Quarter of the 20th Century Bluesnever seems to come out of the miasma. Although only five songs long, Bellflur's EP hints at what should be one heck of a sophomore album due later this year. Until then pick this up, you won't be disappointed just don't get lost in the haze.
