BK One Tune In Radio do Canibal
I've reviewed a veritable ton of Rhymesayers albums this year and one thing has become glaringly obvious, this is the finest hip hop label in America. They are clearly the most consistent and coolest label releasing underground alternative hip hop around and they have yet to falter. BK-One's Radio do Canibal is no different and is a brilliant jazzy chilled out hip hop record with a conscious.
Radio do Canibal is a well thought out and excellently produced record that sounds like a funky trip down a jazz inspired hip hop roadway. Maybe sounding a bit like Jurassic 5 in their prime mixed with jazz, the group takes an original and cool approach to their songs. With influences coming from all sides and rhymes following suit, BK-One waste no time with filler and instead packs every inch of this disc with some form of music. Heck, even the interludes sound like a jazz quartet giving a clinic. It's great stuff that also features more collaborations than Rhymesayers could have ever imagined. With a talent line up including Brother Ali, Abstract Rude, POS, and Scarface to just name a few this record is literally packed to the gills with great songs AND great talent.
From the crazy car chase jazz funk of, "Tema Do Canibal," to the dope rhymes and beats of, "Face It" BK-One demonstrate song after song that borders, economics, or language are barriers that this group ca over come. Listening to Radio do Canibal is like listening to the best of both worlds because on one side you've got totally modern cutting edge independent hip hop and on the other you've got absolutely insane jazz funk that carries this record back to a different time and place. It's awesome stuff that will leave you dizzy and confused as to what you just heard and when you heard it but you'll find yourself loving every minute of it.
What can Rhymesayers say? They've done it again, they've uncovered yet another undiscovered talent who goes about things differently and in doing so has made one heck of an impact. With an international feel and a funky fresh approach BK-One is clearly one of the coolest talents to emerge from the independent hop scene this year. Radio do Canibal is an excellent album that's as open minded as anything you are likely to hear and it's ability to embrace both urban and jazzy flavors truly makes this record awesome.
