Air Waves Is Light As Air
The first song on Air Waves self-titled EP scared me to death. About thirty seconds into the first tune on their EP and I had already started to lose hope as I was forced to plug my ears because the song sounded like a drunken homeless woman rambling on with the aid of an acoustic guitar. It was a horrible experience and a band tune. Thankfully, I persevered through that song and as soon as the second song popped it felt like redemption. The clouds opened up and sun came out...it was as if I was immediately rewarded for my patience with a fantastic little record.
You see, buried beneath the incoherent rambling of "Gems," lies an EP of sweet, lo-fi tinged, lazy, folky pop that's not bad at all. In fact, Air Wavesis quite a nice five song record that would benefit greatly from a different song arrangement. In fact, the second song, "Lightning," really should lead this record off simply because it sounds like a breezy beach walk set to music and wouldn't scare the bejesus out of you like, "Gems," does Thankfully, "Gems," is the only song that is bad on this record. While much of Air Waves is folk based pop, and I'm generally not a fan of that, the bands ability to give off lazy summery vibes elevates the band above the norm and warms the cockles of my heart. Air Waves as a result is an enjoyable record that hides itself behind a barrier of one bad song. Call it a filtering system, call it a bad arrangement, call it whatever...it's an interesting choice. Anyway, buy this, skip the first song, and relive the glory days of your summer as fall and winter prepare to make life cold and blustery (or if you live in the Panhandle...very tropical).
