You're Invited To the Manson Family Picnic

The Manson Family Picnic, as you might guess, aren't exactly on the same playing field with the rest of us. With a name like that how could you ever be? Thankfully, as disturbing as the name might be their strangeness is a very good thing. You see their self-titled EP is what would happen if The Moldy Peaches left New York and moved to the country with Beirut as their travelling buddy. The music they create is a hoedown of folky quirkiness that's as tender hearted as it is bizarrely amusing.

Manson Family Picnic despite it's name and eccentricities is actually really good. They don't write murder ballads but they do manipulate their folksy ways into something approaching cute and cuddly twee pop. It's sweet, lilting stuff that just sounds like it needs a bit of a hug. From the jumpy and jittery, "The Mistakes," to the shuffling dance of, "Kentucky Waltz," Manson Family Picnic prove they aren't nearly as scary as their name might suggest. The truth is, they are different and they write different songs, but those songs are fantastic little tunes that while filled with idiosyncrasies, are deep down neat pop songs. I love it and after listening to this record, attending the Manson Family Picnic might just be the most fun you've ever had...provided Charles isn't there.
