Wallpaper Gets Down and Dirty
The great thing about Wallpaper is that they have their tongue so firmly in cheek that they really can do no wrong. This electro-soul duo is really just two nerdy guys who seem to be having to much fun using auto-tune and pro-tools that serious musicians. The scary thing is they end up making super slick, clichéd and hilarious pseudo dance pop that actually is really, really good. Their debut album, DooDoo Face is about as serious as the title implies and it's about as much fun as well.
Sounding something like the entire Top 40 rammed through Auto-Tune and then candy coated with some stylish synths and slick beats DooDoo Faceplays up it's kitschness throughout the entire length of the album. Listening to DooDoo Faceis like listening to a giant inside joke that you've been let in upon and once you hear it, you just can't get over it and have to listen to it again. This record is awesome and it's like the best party you've ever been invited to times 10. And while it might not be the best album of 2009 but it's the most fun album of the year and there isn't one duff track on this thing.
DooDoo Faceis an album that is self-deprecating and never loses sight of the fact that so much of today's dance music takes itself so seriously that the fun is sucked right out of it. Wallpaper breathe new life into the genre with an arch sense of humor and irony and it works. From the hilarious ode to drinking, "I Got Soul, I'm So Wasted," to the synth funk of "Frk Scn," and the pre-party jam of, "Gettin Drip," DooDoo Face is an instant party classic. A funkier, funnier album you are not likely to hear anytime soon and probably beyond that. Fun stuff to go big on the weekend with...just like a T. Rex.
