Themselves Hit and Hit Hard
Themselves are another band that's part of the Anticon posse. Unlike, Why?, however, Themselves actually are a hip hop duo and seem more inline w/the rest of the label's roster. Having been relatively unseen for the last couple of years, it's nice to know that these guys are back and better than ever. Coming at the listener hard and fast, Themselves are like an 18 wheeler headed straight for you and their latest album, Crownsdown is like the last tire hitting you flat on the head.
Heavy, angry, and brutal, Crownsdown is truly something to behold. It's a record that flows with blazing speed and rhymes that whirl by like a category five hurricane. Crownsdown is far from a club hop album but instead something that literally will beat the living heck out of you while screaming in your ear. That being said, the record is actually really quite good; you'll just need some body armor to listen to it.
It's hard to get over just how brutally fast this record is. It's almost as if by the time it gets started it's done and it's left you a wreck from just being next to it. Crownsdown is far from melodic, instead, it relies on sheer force to burrow it's way through to the inner recesses of your skull. Whether it's with blazing speed as on, "You Ain't It," or the funky drummer on, "Skinning the Drum," Themselves are set to overrun you with military like precision. It's truly impressive stuff that's not destined for the Top 40 and that's awesome. Crownsdown is independent hip hop that's a bit much for the mainstream and that's just fine with me.
