The Opposite Sex Lives and Burns

Somewhere between the worlds of 90's indie rock and the dark dreary world of gothdom lies The Opposite Sex. No other band around today manages to successfully combine the bombast of classic indie rock guitars with heart breaking vocals than this band. Their EP, Live And Burn is a six song sampler of just how the band straddles the two worlds and does so with deadly precision. Sounding something like Pavement if they were fronted by the Cure's Robert Smith, The Opposite Sex resembles a classic pop structure but beaten up just enough to make it rough around the edges.

Live And Burn fascinates simply because of it's bi-polar nature and just how unstable it all seems to be. In listening to this EP, you kind of expect the band to either totally destroy and shred their instruments or collapse in a big pile of depression. As optimistic and positive as that sounds, The Opposite Sex actually pull it off rather well, making Live And Burn a really good little record. From the clashing of guitars on, "Is That You," to the punky spiky-ness of the title track, The Opposite Sex plough their way through this EP with reckless abandon as if their lives were meaningless and depended on these songs. That being said, Live And Burn is a verbose joy that's like a little black cloud made of loud guitars that follows you everywhere and rains upon you. You'll only be happy when it rains...and that's not a bad thing.
