Oh Those Meanderthals
London's Idjut Boys (Dan Tyler & Conrax McConnell) and Rune Lindbaek from Oslo are the Meanderthals. As longtime friends and fans of each other's music they have discussed the idea of working together in a musical context for years and in 2008, they finally began to make those ideas a reality. Once they got started they couldn't stop so throughout last year the members of Meanderthals traveled back and forth between Oslo and London to create their debut album, Desire Lines.
The product of their creative collaboration, Desire Linesis an ambient exploration of tropical sunsets, outer space journeys, and sound-tracks to lush movies that haven't been made yet. Meanderthals have created a lush, multi-layered world where strings, guitars, steel drums, and synths all coexist to create a mood of Balearic relaxation. In other words, Desire Lines is a fusion of folk, ambient, and chill out that sounds like your last vacation only more relaxed.
This is an album whose songs ebb and flow like the tide; they come and go, quietly slipping by unobtrusively as time moves on. Meanderthals have truly written a beautiful chilled out landscape that once you enter you may never want to leave. From the guitar twangs of "Kunst or Ars," to the funky beats of the space exploration that is, "Andromeda (Prelude to the Future)," Desire Lines is an epic work of ambient atmospheres and subtle grooves that continually impresses with its ability to make my imagination run wild.
For a cross continental effort, Desire Linessounds anything but thrown together or like it came from Britain or Norway. The songs and environments that Meanderthals create on Desire Lines are exquisitely cool and with the right movie, this could be the greatest soundtrack ever recorded. Until then, slip on Desire Lines and slide away with the Meanderthals...your mind and consciousness demands it.
