Mittens On Strings Try to Grow

Mittens on Strings are a band of friends who have been playing music together in some way, shape, or form since 2000. What started out as a summertime distraction ended up turning into being a fulltime effort that has lead them to the streets of Chicago. And yet despite that much time together and trying to take it to the next level, the band is far from a polished unit instead relying on heart to carry it through which without great songs isn't always the best thing.

Sounding a bit lo-fi at times and not that good at others, Mittens On Strings may be a full time effort but it sounds as though they still need some time to develop. While their album, Let's Go to Baba'sdoes have some great ideas on it at times, it just sounds a bit to disjointed for my liking. Mixing a bit of lo-fi with some down home folk vibes, Mittens on Strings try to be a different kind of folk pop band but instead at times sound a bit boring. While I love the idea of using a fiddle in the middle of all that they do, it seems as though it get muddled in the mix somewhere. The potential is there to make Let's Go to Baba's a warm folksy little record that would be the perfect Cracker Barrel road trip kind of record but it's immaturity shows and as a result it gets lost along the way.

Let's Go to Baba's is an ok effort, but it seems as though Mittens on Strings needs a little more time coming together as a band and figuring out how to solidify their sound before they record again. With the right guidance and embracing that rustic folksy feeling full on, they could eventually be onto something big. But until then they're just a young band with some growing to do. Certainly a band to keep an eye on.
