Meghan Wolf's Theory of Gravity
With Lilith Fair returning next year it only makes sense that the singer songwriter would start to make it's presence known once again. A bit removed from the current crop of folk crowding the scene, singer songwriter stuff is a bit more adventurous musically but still about as entertaining and cliche as its cousin. Much like folk music, these days you really have to do something different to make yourselves stand out amongst the eight zillion other singer songwriters out there and for most it's to hard if not impossible to do. One such artist trying to make her way in the over crowded world of the acoustic musician is Meghan Wolf.
Unashamedly cute and armed with a backing band, Meghan at least attempts to do things differently and her album, Theory of Gravityalmost does. Unfortunately, a lot of the record gets buried in some 90's sort of interpretation of a singer songwriter. Sounding something like a mellower Meredith Brooks or Alanis Morrissette with a good voice, Meghan Wolf recalls the first frenzy of the Lilith Fair and all that went with it. While a lot of this record isn't the most exciting stuff in the world, there are a few highlights (see "Shifting Skies") which at least make Theory of Gravity tolerable. Unfortunately for me, I have such a hard time listening to this kind of stuff it was too little to late.
Theory of Gravity is the perfect record for those who love acoustic instrumentation with a bit of electric mixed in for good measure. But, if you crave something with a bit more oomph this record will lull you to sleep. That being said, Meghan Wolf seems to be a good songwriter and would seem to be a perfect fit for the traveling folk fest next year that is the Lilith Fair.
