Lightning Dust's Infinite Light
Lightning Dust is made up of Amber Webber and Joshua Wells who are also members of Canadian band Black Mountain. Meeting through their involvement in what they described as two of the saddest bands in Canada, and then their "day job," band they have apparently chosen to make something inspired by the bright rays of the sun breaking through the haze and clouds. While not necessarily as downbeat as their past efforts, this duo channels strange sounds and crafts classic pop arrangements into something that's cosmically beautiful and obtuse at the same time. Their latest album, Infinite Light, is an angelic testament to that as it's not your usual pop record.
Sounding something like 70's AM radio covered in a velvet fog Infinite LightLightning Dust warble their way through their songs using a Steinway and vocals in a similar way that the White Stripes use drums and guitar. The two play off each other and guide each other through the songs and they're an integral part of how things work with this band. It's a fascinating sound because at times it's as if Lightning Dust come off like a warped record or a stretched tape on repeat. With falsetto vocals that reach for the heavens but become broken along the way, Amber Webber sounds like a ghost trying to escape the great beyond. She's spooky and it gives much of Infinite Light it's otherworldly feel.
Infinite Lightis an intriguingly chilling album. It's an unearthly presence on your record player that's dramatic and different. Not pop in a traditional sense, it's charms lie in the fact that it's so unusual and eerie. This is the kind of album that Enya would record if she ever dabbled in music outside of new age and wore cowboy boots. If that's not an intriguing prospect than I don't know what is and that's reason enough to check Lightning Dust out.
