Jordan Galland Is Airbrushed
Airbrush marks the solo-debut of filmmaker and musician Jordan Galland, adding to a discogrpahy that includes work with producer Mark Ronson for the band Domino, Sean Lennon on Friendly Fire, and the new Daniel Merriweather album. Galland first hit the stage and studio with his original band, Dopo Yume, writing, recording, and producing the bands five albums. This early and rather fantastic work, laid the groundwork for his solo career which now so busy he should probably have a secretary. Smart and theatrical, Jordan Galland is among the more unique and interesting solo artists around.
Sounding something like My Life Story, Edwyn Collins, Tindersticks, and the Divine Comedy all rolled up into one solo package, Jordan Galland writes sweeping pop music that's written in a widescreen format. Airbrushis a large orchestral record that's packed to the gills with horns, drama, and pop music that's a cut above your average Miley Cyrus tune. It's really quite good stuff that at times croons it's way across the stage with a strong sense of irony and tongue in cheek humor. It's that witty approach and Jordan's flare for the dramatic that really set this album apart and probably the reason why I like it so much.
Whether it's an intimate ballad such as, "Knows Nothin," or the quirky lusty tale, "Everyone Else Is Boring," Airbrushpacks a dramatic punch. This is music for a smokey room and a host of cabaret dancers. It's music of lust, love, and loss peppered with a sense of wry humor and enough cool sounds to keep you gripped. Music like this is such a rarity now days, thankfully, Jordan Galland is here to preserve it and, like his peers, gallantly put a bit of drama into all our lives. Thank you sir!
