Here Is What Is and their six song ep, Done Before It Startsis all about truth in marketing because that pretty much sums up this record. Just as you really start to get the feel for HIWI and really realize that this is a pretty decent band, Done Before It Startsis over. It's a depressing situation because the band starts off a bit slowly and eventually gets a full head of steam going with impressive technical, jazzy indie rock that sounds like classic Polyvinyl bands Aloha, Ivory Coast, and Rainer Maria. It's really quite impressive stuff that's as technical as it is creative and that gives the record quite a unique sound that's as lofty as it is tuneful.
The record is filled with loads of broad strokes and colorful musicianship which gives Done Before It Starts much of it's character. HIWI take the indie rock template here and manipulate it and shape it into something far more progressive and intricate then it usually is. What's remarkable about this is, rather than get lost in a sea of muso tendencies, the band writes for the hook and then lets their fingers do the walking. One listen to the title track will and it's sprawling eight minute instrumental prowess keyed off of a repetitive guitar riff ,which I can still hear in my head, will reaffirm this. While Done Before It Startsis truly done before it starts, Here Is What Is impressive with a combination of musical dexterity and songs that are catchy. It's a balance that works for these guys and I can't wait to hear more from them.
