Fischerspooner Provides The Entertainment
Fischerspooner, the art pop performance project created and helmed by Warren Fischer and Case Spooner, is back with their third album Entertainment. Recorded over an eon, or what seemed like one, the new album is just as it's title suggests entertainment. With help coming from producer Jeff Saltzman and appearances form Ann Magnusun (Bongwater), Gabriel Olegavic (Lady Sovereign, Spektrum) and Steven Stein (Steinski) the band continues marching to it's own beat and creating music that sets the trends rather than follows them.
Released on their own FS label, the band is free once again to explore the worlds of art and music hand in hand and create a production not only on stage but on record as well. As a result, Entertainmentis a slice of synth-pop heaven that's filled with drama, excitement, and a stirring sense of what makes good pop music. This record is so good, that I would even hazard a guess and say, that Entertainmentis by far the strongest of the trio of Fischerspooner records. This is a band that's been around the block, been the most buzzed about band on the planet, dropped, and stuck in limbo forever so it only seems to make sense that they come out of the gate here focused, on track, and make a record that's really, really good. Thankfully, for them and us, that's exactly what they did!
In thinking about it what really makes Entertainmentstand out is that unlike so many of their peers, who have done the electro thing to death, Fischerspooner actually write songs in a conventional sense with verse chorus verse structures as opposed to beat based bangers that seem to go on forever. The fact that these guys can actually put together a decent pop song has undoubtedly helped them survive the electroclash backlash and subsequent re-emergence of dance music. This is a group that obviously has no problem in creating songs that are very dance floor friendly but also giving you a little more to hang on to than a killer beat. Sounding something like a more popped out Nine Inch Nails (see "Danse en France") meets Bowie gone electronic (see "The Best Revenge") Entertainment demonstrates this over and over again.
With their flare for the dramatic and their ability to create songs that are more than just an 808 out of control, Fischerspooner have continued to develop and evolve into a into a well honed weapon of electronic destruction. Entertainmentis an exhibition of their talents and after listening to this record and admiring their song writing ability it's no wonder that they've become the godfathers of the electro scene. Here's to respecting your elders and all that they can do.
