Cage Departs From Me
Plagued by abuse, institutionalization, drugs, and violence throughout his life, Cage's nightmarish experiences have permeated his art and defined the music he makes today. His latest album, Depart From Me is as rough and as real as his life has been. If you've ever been down on your luck, addicted to drugs or been a victim of abuse this is a record that Cage knows you can relate to and that was his goal. While this record is the very definition of gritty, Depart From Meisn't gangsta rap, but one would guess that if many a wannabe gangster heard Cage's take on his life, they might not want to pursue that gangsta lifestyle after all.
Unfortunately, as gritty, real and potentially inspiring as it is, Depart From Me is just not that great of a record. It's just rough, noisy, and at times sounds like old Rage Against the Machine demo's from the early 90's. There's no doubt that there is potential here and I give Cage all the props in the world for turning what brought him down as a motivator to escape his previous life but his time as a rapper just hasn't come yet but I'm sure it will.
Depart From Meis a bit underwhelming from a musical perspective and a bit overwhelming from a lyrical perspective. Cage has had one heck of a life judging by the tales on this record and as soon as he develops some studio prowess he's going to have one heck of a career.
