Big Fresh Are Forever
Lexington, Kentucky's Big Fresh have been away for a while. In fact, it's been nearly eight years since their last album. In that epic span of time they've been all over regional college radio and even joined Apples in Stereo on tour in 2008 all the while still working on their sophomore album. With the recording actually completed, this collective of artists, filmmaker, and electronic experimentalists have finally saw fit to release the mysterious record that is Big Fresh Forever.
The first thing you notice about Big Fresh is that they have short attention spans. This is a band that doesn't have time for long drawn out passages and musicality. Oh no, Big Fresh crams all that nonsense into short bursts of pop that sound like snippets of AM Radio whizzing by the dial. In fact, Big Fresh Forever moves so quickly that it has eight songs that are no longer than two minutes long.
Do these short bursts of pop take away from anything? Heck no, in fact the short songs are literally sugary sweet slabs of twee pop that sounds like the Apples in Stereo meeting Of Montreal in a candy store. With songs about funnel cakes and Oreos how could Big Fresh Foreverbe anything but a tasty treat? Filled with awesome bouncy synth-laden pop with hooks that will give you cavities this is the soundtrack to spring in under 25 minutes.
As complicated as music has become today, it's nice to know a group like Big Fresh can crank out thirteen hits in under a half hour and still have something that is fun, exciting, and so simple that it works on every level. Big Fresh Foreveris pop at its purest unrefined state. It's raw uncomplicated nature is addictively affectionate and delectable and just about impossible not to like. Long live indie pop!
