Company Flow Re-Release Funcrusher Plus

How do you improve perfection? Hmm..that's a good question. In Company Flow's case, you re-release their epic debut album that's been out of print since 2006. Re-mastered and expanded Funcrusher Plus is a welcome return to the Company Flow discography and more importantly turn-tables everywhere.

Originally released in 1997, Funcrusher Plus was about a decade ahead of everything else. Even back then Company Flow were already laying the ground work for Indie-hop and what would eventually become a parallel scene to the big money making mainstream rap world that everyone knows. This lo-fi disjointed masterpiece sounds like it was recorded in MC El-P's bedroom on about a five dollar budget using a rusty Tascam four track recorder. It's for those reasons well as that fact that Funcrusher Plusis absolutely raw, gritty, down to earth, and geeky that this record is awesome and still fascinating twelve years later.

Funcrusher Plus is an abstract work of genius that at times is almost too bizarre and too difficult to listen to, but repeated listens will reveal a record that's intelligent and real. This is a record that blazed a path forward and left the competition in the dust. There's not really a lot more that can be added to the decade or so of feedback this record has generated. But what you need to know is that Funcrusher Plus is a bonified classic hip hop record that's strange, lo-fi, and about as far from anything that's popular as you can imagine. The fact that twelve years after it's release you still won't hear a more tripped out and outlandish hip hop record says more about it's status then anything I could ever write.
